Choosing a location for your beehive as a beginner can be a bit hard. A well-thought spot is essential for people, farm animals and the success of the colony.

How close to a fence can you put a beehive?

There is no set rule of how close or far a hive should be from a fence. However, there should be at least a 4-feet distance behind and on the sides of the hive and a 25-feet clearance at the entrance.  Having a hive facing a barrier is good for urban areas. The bees are forced to fly up above human height, minimizing their interaction with people and, consequently,  the number of stings. 

If too close to a barrier, the bees may fly left or right before gaining altitude. They are handy and flexible creatures and are able to figure out their way. The bees go up by choice. They can work their own flight path individually. If very close to the wall, they can use a landing board to walk out and take off. They can go straight up or take off in both directions. However, it is not good to squeeze the hive to the fence in such a way that they find it difficult to come and go, especially during the busy seasons. Fencing ensures the safety of your hives, especially in places with bears and raccoons.  A beekeeper also needs space around the hive. 

Can you point the hive entrance next to a fence?

Yes, you can face a beehive towards a barrier. By doing so, the bees gain altitude quickly rather than the gentle slope flight trend. This placement comes in handy when you have close neighbors since it helps the bees to fly high and are not usually noticeable.  

Is it possible to keep bees in a residential area? 

Keeping bees in a residential area can be a bit challenging, and the placement is tricky.  You should first check the local ordinances in your region to ensure it is legal.  Don’t rush to do a course, build a hive, and order a bee package only to realize beekeeping is not legal in your area. If allowed, there may be restrictions on the number of hives that you can have. You should also a consider a flight barrier a few feet from the hive entrance. It is also possible to use artificial hedges to keep the flight path of bees above the human heads. You should also let your close neighbors know what you are up to. Choose a safe distance from your house to ensure safety of your family.

Can you place a beehive on a rooftop?

A rooftop is an ideal location for a beehive in urban settings. However, there are a few precautions to observe. These include avoiding placing the hive too close to the edge, if stung you may fly and fly safely to the ground. Secondly, ensure all parts of the hive are secured using crank straps. Strong winds can dismantle the hive parts to the ground. Thirdly, avoid the roof by all means if climbing a tall ladder or using a fire escape. Removing heavy honey supers may be difficult in such situations.
