Bee's Behavior

What Smell do bees hate?

Honey bees naturally love the smell of nectar and flowery fragrances. You will see them around you if you wear floral perfumes, sunscreen, or hairspray. However, there are some scents that are unpleasant to them, and you can use them when you want to keep them away.  Surprisingly they can smell the scents while miles away. Their sense of smell is approximately 100 times better than humans.

While they are beneficial in our gardens, they can be detrimental in our houses, and it is crucial to know how to ward them away.  Here is a list of smells that bees hate.

Citronella

Citronella has an intense sour fragrance that is used to keep off mosquitos. It is also one of the smells that bees hate and is beneficial in keeping bees away from your home. It is safe and non-toxic to buzzing insects, and you can comfortably use it around your house. Most people use citronella by burning citronella candles.

Garlic

Garlic has a strong, pungent smell that not only repels the pesky vampires but also the bees tend to keep away from it. It does not smell great to humans, either. Just sprinkle some garlic powder around the house, spread some cloves around, and you will not trace a single in your home. Garlic has been used for decades to keep bees and other insects away.

Smoke

Beekeepers use smoke in their hives when doing inspections or harvesting honey. While it is non-toxic to the bees, it scares them to death in a way that they remain inactive. The smoke also deters them from releasing pheromones to alert other bees of impending danger. Smoke reduces their defensiveness.

Vinegar

Bees loathe the strong smell of vinegar, although we use it for many tasks around the house. While you may want to scare away the bees with it from your surrounding or house, you must be cautious since it is toxic to them. It should also not be sprayed directly on them. You should be sure to mix it with water to make it potent.

Peppermint Smell

Peppermint is one of the plants that bees will run away from or avoid as much as possible. They will also keep off peppermint oil. It is one of the famous essential oils people use daily, making it ideal for avoiding bee stings. It is also a component of mosquito repellers. If you want to use peppermint oil to keep off bees from your house, you can simply dip some cotton pieces in it and place them on the entrances. Alternatively, you can plant peppermint plants in your garden, flower beds, or flower pots closer to your home.

Rosemary

It is a highly effective natural bee repellant that can keep off the bees from entering your garden, house, or backyard. The bees also hate rosemary oil. If you want to keep it from your home, you can plant a rosemary plant on the windowsill. The buzzing lovelies will never dare close the threshold.

Cinnamon

While cinnamon is a popular spice in our kitchens, its strong scent makes the bees turn up their noses and fly off. You can simply sprinkle cinnamon in areas where you don’t want bees or use cinnamon sticks.
