How many times does a queen bee get mated?
The queen bee is usually the heartbeat of the hive and the sole bee in her caste. She is the mother of all the bees( worker and drone bees) in the hive and helps to maintain the colony population. Unlike the other bee castes that live mostly for a few weeks, he is known to live for years. In her larval stage, she is fed with royal jelly exclusively to mature her reproductive organs. Her main duty is to lay eggs; she can lay up to 2500 eggs in a day! We know that a virgin queens go for mating flights before she starts laying eggs, but how many drones are involved?

How many times does a queen bee get mated?
A queen mates once in her entire life with 10-20 drones. This happens in mid-air at a drone congregation area. She stores the millions of sperm in a special organ known as spermatheca, which she uses her entire life. Her life span usually depends on how many drones she mates with. The workers replace her if her stock gets depleted or she starts laying unfertilized eggs only. She does not go for nuptial flights again.
Most queens are productive for about three years, although some beekeepers prefer replacing them yearly. When she lays an egg, she can choose to fertilize it or not. Fertilized eggs become workers(foragers), while unfertilized eggs become male drones. She selectively fertilizes an egg by releasing sperm from her spermatheca as it goes through the oviduct. She goes for mating 1-2 weeks after her emergence and never mates inside her own hive or colony.
How far does the queen fly to meet with the drones?
On average, most mating flights are within a mile of the queen bee hive. If she finds a drone congregation area nearby, mating takes place close to her colony. Drone congregation areas are places where thousands of drones await a chance to mate with a queen. If she cannot find drones nearby, she can fly further, looking for them. The mating flight can last up to 30 minutes, depending on the time it takes to encounter drones.
The drones also fly between 1 to 3 miles from their colonies in search of drone congregation areas where they wait for queens. Male drones usually die immediately after copulation. By mating outside the colony, the queen increases the odds of mating with diverse drones and minimizes the chances of inbreeding. After mating, she starts laying eggs after a few days(2 to 5 days).

Worker bees are unable to mate. They are robbed of their reproduction ability after being fed with bee bread on the 4th day of their larval stage. However, they sometimes lay eggs which develop into drones if allowed to mature. Their reproduction is usually limited to queenless colonies. The queen releases pheromones in the hive that suppress their ability to lay eggs. If by any chance, a worker lay eggs when the queen is in the colony, the queen will consume them to ensure dominance.
